How to Make an Igloo

Those of you that know me well, know that I am all about life experiences! In my classroom and especially in my home. Well, when I found this kit to make a real igloo I couldn't resist getting it for Mason for Christmas. I mean come on, let's face it, not much igloo building going on in Natchez, Mississippi!! Anyway, it was one of the "Wow! What's this?!?" gifts that was quickly tossed to the side Christmas morning, but it resurfaced during the Christmas clean-up process and became a top priority for him. Well, we finally remembered to freeze the mold and he got to build his igloo last night. He was very serious about building it! I tried to help a few times, but when I knocked the whole thing down trying to help him get the pieces the correct way I was told, "Mom!! You messed it up! I can do it by myself!" So I left him alone.

He knock the whole thing down a few times himself. I asked him what he thought the Inuit people (we read about them in the book that came with the kit) would do if their whole igloo fell down while they were building it, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I guess they would die because they don't have a place to live." I guess those are the facts of life! I told him I was glad we were American and lived in MS because the two of us together were not the best igloo builders. He did ask for my help getting the top to sit correctly, but the rest he did on his own.

After building the igloo, we made the packet of "real snow" that came with the kit. Snow mixed in a bowl! Who'd a thought? He thought that was cool. He put it EVERYWHERE! Including my carpet, but he had a good time.

We have saved our wonderful igloo in the outside freezer. I asked Mason what he was going to do with it. He told me he was going to keep it for a little while and then send it to his Mimi in MN. Well, I guess we'll see!
