Farewell to Big Red

Well, it's a sad day in the Wells' household...Big Red has finally left us after almost 13 years. He was driven down the street by a guy named Mike and parked as if teasing us across the street and three houses down. Lots of memories in Old Red. Driving back and forth to Starkville, Red's ONE wreck, moving things to our first apartment, hunting trips, moving things to Natchez, taking Mason fishing, being at the camp, the boys playing in the bed of the truck...memories, memories. Patrick has been very gloomy today since Red pulled away, he says there will never be another like him. Though we are sad, we wish Big Red well in his future adventures.

Another Season Come and Gone

Well, it is probably safe to say that my son is addicted! Another duck season has come and gone and he, like his father, is counting the days until the season starts again. He had a great time this year hunting with his daddy and the Funky Bunch. None of the other guys have children, so Mason is their adopted “little hunting buddy.” It does make me fell better to know that he has so many eyes watching him while he is out there. He’s so serious about the whole thing. He gets to the camp with all those guys and starts talking huntin’ like he is just a grown as they are. Surprisingly he knows more than you would expect a 5 year old to know about hunting, guns, ducks, calling, etc. He loves it! Love everything about it--the clothes, the calls, the gear, the face paint...So folks, I guess that I am just going to have to get used to spending those long winter months by myself on the weekends because I already have two addicts and I feel sure that I will have another in the next few years!

How to Make an Igloo

Those of you that know me well, know that I am all about life experiences! In my classroom and especially in my home. Well, when I found this kit to make a real igloo I couldn't resist getting it for Mason for Christmas. I mean come on, let's face it, not much igloo building going on in Natchez, Mississippi!! Anyway, it was one of the "Wow! What's this?!?" gifts that was quickly tossed to the side Christmas morning, but it resurfaced during the Christmas clean-up process and became a top priority for him. Well, we finally remembered to freeze the mold and he got to build his igloo last night. He was very serious about building it! I tried to help a few times, but when I knocked the whole thing down trying to help him get the pieces the correct way I was told, "Mom!! You messed it up! I can do it by myself!" So I left him alone.
He knock the whole thing down a few times himself. I asked him what he thought the Inuit people (we read about them in the book that came with the kit) would do if their whole igloo fell down while they were building it, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I guess they would die because they don't have a place to live." I guess those are the facts of life! I told him I was glad we were American and lived in MS because the two of us together were not the best igloo builders. He did ask for my help getting the top to sit correctly, but the rest he did on his own.

After building the igloo, we made the packet of "real snow" that came with the kit. Snow mixed in a bowl! Who'd a thought? He thought that was cool. He put it EVERYWHERE! Including my carpet, but he had a good time.

We have saved our wonderful igloo in the outside freezer. I asked Mason what he was going to do with it. He told me he was going to keep it for a little while and then send it to his Mimi in MN. Well, I guess we'll see!
The completed project...

Christmas in Natchez

Well, I made it through hosting my first family Christmas. The boys had a great time! Santa was good to them! As you can see....

Patrick's family joined us for Christmas this year. We had Daddy Don, Grammie, Uncle BB, Lacey, Uncle Casey, and Aunt Jamie. It was a little crowded in our tiny little den with 10 people plus presents, but we had a good time.

The festivities started with the Santa Parade on Christmas Eve. In Natchez we have a Santa Claus committee and they have a parade of cars through town starting at 7:30 a.m. and it goes on until who knows when. Well, they made it to us about 10:40 a.m. and the boys saw Santa and got lots of candy. That evening we headed to the Christmas Eve service at Jefferson Street; it was very nice. A little sad at the end of the service to hear the benediction (my friend Faye always did the benediction at church and I haven't been in church for a benediction since she died.-I do still go to church, I'm just gone out with the children by then) We came home and Mason lit the candles on our advent wreath; then he and Cooper opened up their Christmas p.j.'s and it was off to bed.

Our Christmas day started at about 7 a.m. when I got up to go to the bathroom and when I came out Mason was waiting at his door. I let Mason wake Cooper up and we went to see what Old St. Nick left for us!! Mason was very excited about his bike; Cooper wasn't sure what to make of it all at first, but he caught on quick. From there we went straight outside to ride the new bike and new jeep. It was great entertainment while we waited to Uncle BB, Lacey and Aunt Jamie to get to the house from the camp. As soon as they arrived we headed inside to open presents. We had soooooo many gifts that we opened in shifts! 1st the right half of the tree then the left. We watched the boys rip through their presents and in between breaks enjoyed opening gifts of our own. Everyone lounged around for awhile, then we headed next door to Aunt Linda's for Christmas dinner. It was very good! After stuffing ourselves sick, we headed back to the house. Daddy Don and Grammie had to get on the road and the rest of our company was not far behind them. After getting everyone off we rested for awhile and then decided to go to Vidalia to see the lights on the levee. Cooper didn't even make it out of the neighborhood before he was asleep! Mason, Patrick and I enjoyed the lights and headed home-Mason didn't make it home! We unloaded the boys and went straight to bed ourselves. It was a long, but enjoyable day!

Ok, I am going to try this...

Ok, I guess that I am going to try to do this! I am not sure that I can keep up with it or with my friends that seem to keep up with thiers soooo well, but I guess that I will do what I can. I have never blogged before, so this should be interesting.....
